While using Microsoft Exchange Server, if you manually try to open the posted item, you may receive error message like "The file Drive:\OrgName\PublicFolders\PublicFolderName\ItemName.eml could not be opened because it does not exist or is being used by another application (0x800CCF65, 3)"


The main reason of the error is issues in Microsoft Exchange Server. The issue may occur in the Exchange Server when you use the GFI MailSecurity anvirus program. The GFI antivirus program keeps the file locks on files which are attached to the posted item. Sometime, issue also occur if there is problem in the pst file. Therefore, to fix Outlook error "Cannot open this item, Unknown error", you need to disable the GFI MailSecurity antivirus program but may be a risky one. You can also try using Outlook 2010 in Cached Exchange Mode.


In order to turn on Cached Exchange Mode, follow the following steps:


1. On the 'Tools' menu, go to E-mail Account -> 'View or change existing e-mail accounts' -> Next

2. Under the 'Outlook process e-mail for these accounts in the following order' list, click on 'Exchange Server e-mail account' -> 'Change'

3. Now select 'Use Cached Exchange Mode' check box under Microsoft Exchange Server

4. Exit the settings and restart Microsoft Outlook


Now you can read your emails and access outlook items easily without error.
